A private York & the Avon Valley day trip from Perth uses your own vehicle and chauffeur for the day rather than a coach seat — 88 km and about 1 h 10 min of driving each way, with the departure time, stops and itinerary set by your group. It is quoted as an as-directed booking rather than a fixed one-way fare; the straight one-way transfer to the same point is $177.

York & the Avon Valley, driven

York was settled in 1831 and, unusually for Western Australia, never knocked its main street down. Avon Terrace runs for several blocks of largely intact 19th-century buildings — the Town Hall, the old courthouse, the Residency — with Mount Brown looking back over the valley from above the town. It is ninety minutes east of Perth through the Darling Range.

The wider Avon Valley is the point of the day rather than York alone: Northam's white swans and balloon flights half an hour north, Toodyay's heritage streetscape beyond that, and a wildflower season from August that turns the roadside verges over completely. With a driver the three towns become one comfortable loop instead of a day of navigation.

What you actually see

Avon Terrace, York

A near-continuous 19th-century streetscape — the Town Hall, the courthouse complex and the motor museum, all walkable from a single drop-off.

Mount Brown lookout

The short climb above the town for the view back across the Avon Valley — best in the late afternoon.

Northam

Half an hour north: the Avon River's white swans, the long suspension bridge, and dawn balloon flights over the valley through the cooler months.

Toodyay

Connor's Mill, the Newcastle Gaol museum and a bakery that justifies the detour — the third point of the Avon Valley loop.

York & the Avon Valley, answered

How far is York from Perth?

York is about 96 kilometres and roughly ninety minutes east of Perth Airport through the Darling Range. Northam is a further half hour north, which makes a York–Northam–Toodyay loop a comfortable full day.

When is the Avon Valley at its best?

August to October for wildflowers, when the verges and reserves through the valley carry a heavy display; the cooler months for hot-air ballooning out of Northam; and the first weekend of August for the Avon Descent whitewater race, when the whole valley fills up.

Can you collect us early for a balloon flight?

Balloon flights launch at first light, which means leaving Perth in the dark — a standard booking at the same fixed fare with no early-morning surcharge. The pickup is planned backwards from the launch time with buffer built in.
