Perth Racing's summer carnival runs at Ascot from October to April and peaks on New Year's Day with the Perth Cup — one of the few days in the Perth calendar where an entire crowd dresses up, drinks all afternoon and needs to get home at the same time. Ascot sits five minutes from Perth Airport on the Swan, which sounds convenient right up until the last race, when Grandstand Road and the Great Eastern Highway turn into a single queue.
